The next shop feature for the month of October hails from Lehigh Acres, Florida. Let's give Natalee Wright from Black Willow Soaps a virtual round of applause for taking the time to share her story. As always, check for links below and shower us with comments!
When did
you know you wanted to create and sell handmade items?
My
mother and her friend, Kurt, had been talking about selling handcrafted items
at craft shows in our area. They asked me to join them and bring my soaps and
candles. So, I made a bunch of soaps to go to the craft fair. Unfortunately, it
never panned out and I was left with all of these soaps. Christmas had just
passed, so I couldn’t really gift the items. I had sold on Etsy before with
just original artwork and really couldn’t get it to work out. But, I figured
why not try it again with my new products. So far, it has been a wonderful
journey.
Where
does your inspiration come from?
I gain
inspiration from everything. Most of the time, you can tell what I have been
looking at with my new products! The beach themed tealight candle holder came from a
trip to the beach with my husband. The rose candle holder came from the memory
of the beautiful roses that my mother had in our yard when we lived in Indiana.
My friends and family are a big inspiration and usually the last word on
whether or not one of my products will be listed. Chances are if they like it,
someone else will enjoy it as well.
What’s
the most memorable custom item you’ve created?
My Aunt
Amy told me that she couldn't use certain soaps because they caused her to get
a rash. I created the Lavender Oatmeal Shea Butter Soap just for her. It didn't
cause her to get a rash and she loved it.
Besides
creating things, what do you do?
During
normal business hours, I am a case manager for senior citizens. I help provide
services to senior citizens that allow them to stay in their home instead of
going to a nursing home. If I am not at work, I am usually working on my shop.
My hobbies kind of surround my shop. I like to paint, create, and grow herbs to
put in my soaps. I spend time with my family whenever I can. Most of my family
outings even seem to encompass my shop, like the beach, thrift stores, and the
flea market. In a sense, I am always working…at least in my mind. My brain
never stops thinking about what I could be creating or doing for my shop.
What is
the most important advice anyone has given you?
It will
all work out. In fact, my husband says it repeatedly.
What is
the most important advice you'd like to give to other etsy sellers?
Dive in!
You never know what will happen until you try. I firmly believe that dreams
never die, they just change a little over the years. So, I would say to anyone
who wants to create their own business or exclusively work in the products that
I work in, that they should go for it and see what is waiting at the other end.
Life’s journey begins with a single step, right?
Show Natalee some virtual love! Her back story is truly inspiring, don't forget to stay positive out there!

Event: Downtown Open Market

Location: 308 S. Federal Hwy Boca Raton, Florida 33432

Positives
- FREE! - free to park, and no admission charge
- Variety
- Most craft shows have tons of jewelry vendors, and this event was no
exception. However each vendor had different types and price ranges than
the other. Everything from computer chip resin charms to high class
beaded necklaces. I also spotted some items that I don't often see at
shows such as quilts, pet items, custom painted vans, and detailed paintings.
- Great
location - The craft booths are in a lovely plaza full of local shops
and restaurants, which is a benefit for the customers and vendors! Its
also great that it's on a paved road and not in grass. It's also very
easy to find, right on the corner of a main street.
Negatives
- Outdoors - Of course, Florida weather is unpredictable and you never
know when it will death rain, drizzle softly, or glare down heat like
hell on Earth.
- Low turnout? - When I scoped this show out, it
was an overcast day but there was no rain. I'm not sure if this factored
into how little people were there. I also showed at closer towards the
end at 3pm, so I can't speak for the early afternoon
- No extra
programming - There didn't seem to be any extra activities or
programming at this event. For example, food trucks, a local singer,
health booths, and so on. I love to mosey through booth and check stuff
out, but it was a little to quiet and dull for me. Live music or
something would have been nice!
Vendor Tips
- Not sure if electricity was provided, but I doubt it
- Bring a tent! Although it didn't seem to be required, the vendors under a tent looked more presentable and professional.
- Bring snacks! The restaurants look like they had tasty food, but they also looked a little pricey!
- Turnout
could be hit or miss. I spoke to some vendors and found that several
did great while others did poorly. Just depends on the batch of folks
that show up that day. Again, there may have been less people due to a
chance of rain, but overall vendors said this event is hit or miss.
Bottom Line -
A great event to check out local crafters and their wares. Not entirely
family friendly if you are looking for a day full of activities, but
awesome if you wanted to sit down for Sunday lunch afterwards!
From awhile, I'll be featuring TWO shops each month! Whoop! And just in time for the holiday season! First up for the month of October is the lovely Gari Anne from Bead Lovers Korner. Don't forget to show some love and check her links out at the bottom!
When did
you know you wanted to create and sell handmade items?
I
started making beaded jewelry about 12 years ago. I opened a shop on
Ebay, where I sold a few things, but ended up mostly selling beads. I joined
Etsy 2 years ago and since then have been making and selling a lot more of my
creations.
Where
does your inspiration come from?
I give
all credit for my inspirations to God
What’s
the most memorable custom item you’ve created?
My
Rainbow Moonstone Goddess Necklace would be the most memorable because I made
it by flashlight! We had several Hurricanes go through Central Florida years
back and I sat and made many items with a flashlight type lamp that my husband
set up for me.
Besides
creating things, what do you do?
I have
an ebay store and a website as well as my Etsy Shop. I work full time at home
selling my creations and other beads. I am an Authorized Dealer for Carlo Biagi
Jewelry and Landmark Travel beads so with all of that I stay really busy.
What is
the most important advice anyone has given you?
"Be
nice to everyone because you never know who you are talking to."
What is
the most important advice you'd like to give to other Etsy sellers?
Be
determined, don't give up if you don't get sales instantly. It takes time and
effort to build up enough items, with the right pictures, at the right price
for the right buyers!!

So, a bit last minute but hey better late than never! Hope to see you there!
Hello folks! I'm adding another feature to my blog that I hope will help consumers and vendors a like. Ever hate the feeling of not knowing which markets or indie craft shows are good enough to bother attending or for selling your wares? I've been scoping some events out, and I'll help you decide with a quick review (hopefully)!
Event: The Market at Memorial Hospital Miramar
Date: Weekly, Sunday from 9am-2pm
Location:1901 Southwest 172 Avenue Miramar, FL 33029
More Info Here
Positives
- Variety - There was a great range of vendors and products, from fresh squeezed juice to homemade soaps, from sour orange trees to dietary supplements.
- I highly recommend you check out Frozen Fresh juice blends and Herbeque's pulled pork or mac n cheese ~DELISH! :D
- FREE!! - free to park, and no admission fee. Yay!
- Family friendly - The event definitely catered to all ages, with live entertainment that included Zumba for Kids, Dancercise, and Flamenco! But I'm not sure if on stage performances are weekly.
- Informative - Several Memorial booths were there and chock full of health info. There were also demonstrations that included topics like brown bag composting, hospital food, and french cuisine.
- Easy to find - If you miss a giant hospital with a field of tents, you need more than Google Maps.
Negatives
- Mucky - Due to the on and off rain, the grass got very muddy in spots. It honestly felt like quicksand! They tried to rectify with mulch, but they couldn't get all of it.
- Early Bird - I'm not a morning person, so the time frames are kind of blah to me. I'm not getting up for anything on a Sunday at nine in the morning!
- Outdoors - Of course, Florida weather is unpredictable and you never know when it will death rain, drizzle softly, or glare down heat like hell on Earth.
Vendor Tips
- Jewelry didn't seem to sell, but of the two booths present one was high class sterling beaded jewelry and the other looked liked overpriced dollar store accessories.
- Wear shoes you don't care about! The evil mud will ruin you.
- Need electric? Bring a generator and loooooooong extension cords
- If it does rain, it would be nice if your tent set up allowed customers some shelter
Bottom Line: The Market at Memorial Hospital Miramar is a great event for all ages and you'll be sure to find some sort of organic snack, juice, or body product, plants, and other goodies. Worth it!
Aaahh, my first craft show is next Saturday night and I'm getting nervous! Who's got some last minute tips?
And no, I'm still not ready. O_O. I still need to work on getting a table, how to set up my displays, and making signs. Aacck!
In case you forgot, its the Night Owl Market in Fort Lauderdale, Florida!!
I'd like to share clever idea for headband organization. I think its perfect for a display at a craft show or great for a little dresser decor.
Pinned from The Beauty Department, instructions for this nifty cheap idea can be found here! All you need is a paper towel roll and some fabric! Easy!

"What A Novel Idea" is the May shop of the month. The lovely shop features jewelry made with images of vintage circuses, books, and poetry quotes. Chantelle Wilson, owner and creator, graciously took the time out to answer some questions for us.
When did you know you wanted to create and sell handmade
items?
I started working on Etsy when my super talented mother, a
seamstress extraordinaire, wanted to create her own shop. Knowing nothing about
the internet, I was enlisted to help her build an online shop. After getting
her started, I decided that I wanted to create my own unique items and form my
own store. Please note that my mother still knows nothing about the internet!
Where does your inspiration come from?
Having a love of literature, theatre and music I started out
making jewelry out of altered books and sheet music. Often you'll start out
with one idea and that will snowball into a different direction. I quickly
discovered that I enjoyed working with leather and began creating miniature
journal necklaces. I then developed a love for finding unique images from the
circus, nature and everyday life that could be made into fun and funky jewelry.
It was a thrill when I started to get emails from acrobats and circus
performers from around the world wanting to own one of my circus inspired
pieces. I love creating designs that make a statement and that I know are
uniquely mine.
Besides creating things, what do you do?
Besides the many hours I spend working on my shop I perform
as a singer in a three part harmony band that I founded called The Maisies. We
perform vocal harmony music from the 30s and 40s and I think the vintage feel
of my band often seeps into my jewelry creations. We perform regularly throughout
Toronto at some of the city’s best venues.
What is the most important advice you'd like share with etsy sellers?
I think the best advice I could give to Etsy sellers or to
anyone starting their own creative endeavor comes from the support given to me
by a friend. We so often doubt ourselves and question our own creativity. I
know I do and I so often get in my own way because of my insecurities. I used
to justify what I was doing as far as a jewelry maker by saying "it's just
a little hobby" when really I was wishing to make it more. I'll admit that
it took not a few compliments from friends and family to make my doubts fade
but they have. Now I just create and put it out there. If somebody likes a
piece then that's great. If they don't that's fine too. I believe everyone in
the world is creative and we just have to release our ideas into the universe
and not be afraid of the results because truly there's absolutely nothing to be
afraid of!
Show Chantelle some love & gracious thanks for sharing her story!
